Authorities in San Diego County sought to reassure the public that there was no truth to "widespread" rumors of plans on the part of street gangs to carry out initiation killings at Wal-Mart stores. In recent days, law enforcement agencies in several states, including California, have received numerous calls from people concerned about the supposed upcoming violence at the retail chain's outlets, said Jan Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. "These rumors, which have become widespread in San Diego County, are false," Caldwell said. "The Sheriff's Department has coordinated with other local law enforcement concerning this most recent (urban) legend, and there is no intelligence to corroborate the (claims)." The Internet "helps these falsehoods move with lightning speed and keeps them circulating for longer periods of time," she added.
